Dreaming of working with horses in the Netherlands? Whether you’re a groom, rider, or stable manager, it’s smart to know what to expect — from contracts and insurance to Dutch stable life.
📝 Know Your Rights
Even though the equestrian world has no collective labour agreement (CLA), Dutch law protects employees well. Always ask for a written contract that states your salary, hours, and vacation days. You’re entitled to at least the legal minimum wage plus 8% holiday pay each year (usually paid in May).
Most jobs start with a temporary contract and a one-month probation period — but after three temporary contracts in three years, you’re entitled to a permanent one.
💼 Freelance or Employed?
EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens can freely work in the Netherlands — as freelancers or employees. If you’re from outside Europe, you’ll need a residence permit and must show that your business benefits the Dutch economy.
🏥 Health Insurance Is Mandatory
Anyone living or working here must take out Dutch basic health insurance within four months of arrival. To do this, register with your local municipality to receive your BSN (citizen service number), then choose a Dutch insurer.
🤒 Sickness, Leave & Benefits
If you become ill, your employer must pay at least 70% of your salary for up to two years. Full-time workers receive a minimum of 20 vacation days, often extended to 25. Many employers also offer extras like travel allowances, lunch deals, or training opportunities.
💰 Pension: Ask or Build It Yourself
There’s no automatic pension in the equestrian sector, so ask if your employer contributes. If not, you can easily build your own pension through a Dutch bank or insurer.
🏡 Finding a Place to Live
Housing can be tricky — especially near cities — but many stables provide on-site accommodation. Always check what’s included and sign a proper rental contract. You’ll need a registered address to get your BSN.
🐴 Dutch Stable Culture
There’s no automatic pension in the equestrian sector, so ask if your employer contributes. If not, you can easily build your own pension through a Dutch bank or insurer.
